After work, I was standing at the bus stop waiting in the rain to catch the bus and go home. A fellow bus rider came to the bus stop. We smiled at each other, said hello, then stood silently under our umbrellas. Rain. Drip. Drip. Drip. I was dreaming of the cup of hot chocolate I would have for supper when I got home.
Then, the fellow bus rider turned to me and said, “You must have a pretty singing voice.”
Where in the world did that comment come from, I wondered. “Oh? Why do you say that?”
“Because your voice is so pretty when you say thank you to the bus driver every time you get off.”
Good singing voice? Not even. One that is more suited for a choir of 100 where my voice can blend in and not be noticed. Solos are not for me.
It made me wonder what prompted that comment. I wondered if his wife’s voice was shrill. Nagging. Yelling.
Moral: you never can tell when something that you do or say impresses other people.
Well, actually Nina, you do have a rather pretty voice. It’s very calm and articulate, so I can see why he would think that. And I’m sure you sing very well too – though you of course would never admit it.
That guy was totally hitting on you!
First to Makayla. . . Articulate? Since my little accident last year and the rebuilding of my teeth, I am still having a difficult time with speaking. The back of my teeth isn’t the same shape that I’ve been use to for the last half of a century . . . and singing is harder than speaking . . .
And to Larry — hitting on me? Ha! I don’t think so. I’m about half a foot taller than he is. I think he was just frantically seeking for a conversation starter. . . .
