New Job

Changing jobs — what a grand adventure it can be. Here are some unexpected perks:

  • I have an office with walls and a door. (I’m not in a cube farm . . .)
  • I have a thermostat in my office that controls the temperature. (It’s no longer set at 55 degrees. Ahhh. . .)
  • My office is ‘up the hill.’ I’ll be getting lots of up-and-down-hill walking. (Maybe even lose some thigh cellulite if I’m lucky!)
  • I get additional walking because my office is further away from the bus stop.
  • I already know about 10 employees. It’s nice seeing familiar faces.
  • I got to keep my Mac lap top. Wahoo!
  • I got to keep my iPhone. Double wahoo!!
  • I get to ‘define’ my responsibilities. I told them I don’t do windows or toilets . . .
  • My chair in this office is nicer than in my old office.
  • Tech support is fast, fast, fast. (Albeit they are somewhat dismayed at getting their Windows system to play nicely with my Mac . . .)
  • Since today is just my second day on the new job, I’m sure that in days to come I’ll discover additional perks that I wasn’t expecting!

I now work for Independent Study as a consultant. I work with department chairmen (about 45 of them) to strategically manage their Independent Study portfolio — evaluating the status of their current IS courses, which ones need to be revised (usually due to a new edition of the textbook), and which new courses the chairman would like to have developed.

I am the entire consulting department. Where their used to be 4 people from my previous office who worked part-time doing the IS consulting, those responsibilities have been concentrated into one position, one person — me!
