Read a Good Book Lately?

I have.  Two.

Book one:  A Girl Named Zippy by Haven Kimmel (a non-fiction memoir).

This is an easy to read book about a girl growing up in ‘middle’ America.  I imagine at times Zippy must have exasperated her parents and teachers because she was so spunky and such an independent thinker.  She wasn’t your typical dress-wearing-always-obedient girl growing up in the late 1960s.

While at times the writing is nothing extraordinary, Kimmel occasionally gives us some clever descriptions.  (I would share some with you here, but alas, I’ve already returned the book to the library so I don’t have the book to refer to and I didn’t write any of them down.  Rats!)

Who ever thought that reading about small town life would be so interesting?

Book two: The Simple Truth by David Baldacci (fiction).

Baldacci writes intriguing stories.  Stories with compelling plots that relentlessly hold you in its clutches and won’t spit you out until the very last word. You just can’t figure out how the hero/heroine is going to get out of the predicaments they get into — even if you’ve read the last few pages of the book like I always do.  This book is no exception.

It’s an intriguing story of a Black man in prison for 25 years for committing murder who wants to clear his name.  Even though his hands did the actual crime he really wasn’t  the one responsible.  Throw in a dash of a brilliant attorney clerk for a justice on the Supreme Court, his ex-policeman brother turned defense lawyer, an obnoxious FBI agent, and a down-to-earth detective and you’ve got a good story.

This book is a good read for the airport, beach, bedtime, or the jostling bus ride home.
