Startled!

This past weekend, we had a delightful time babysitting our grandson, Spencer.  Fun, fun, fun.

When I walked into the house carrying Spencer, we heard Grandpa calling out, “Is that Spencer?  Where’s Spencer?”

Spencer squirmed in my arms.  Wiggle.  Kick.  Push away from Grandma.

I finally set him down on the floor in the kitchen.  Standing in the family room, Grandpa smiled and held out his arms. “There’s Spencer!  Come here.”

Spencer ran pell mell through the kitchen then around the corner into the family room and straight for the toys in the closet.  Grandpa stood there, empty arms hanging at his sides.  I guess we now know what is tops on Spencer’s list when he comes for a visit.

While we were eating supper, the phone rang.  Startled, Spencer quickly covered his eyes with his hands.  As Grandpa talked on the phone, Spencer peered between splayed fingers. First at Grandpa talking on the phone.  Then at the phone base on the wall.  Back and forth.  Spenser was totally confused at what was that thing on the wall was.

We realized that he had never before heard the ring of a land line phone.  Aren’t grandparents archaically old-fashioned in  having one?

That’s hilarious. Reminds me of a video I saw where fourth graders listened to the recorded sound of making a dial-up internet connection and had NO IDEA what it could be.

  • Nina :

How sad that we can recognize that sound. Shows how old we are. (I’m assuming that you can recognize it, can’t you?)

  • Makayla :

    I recognize the dial-up sound.

    :)

  • Nina :

Makayla, you are too young to recognize it! Or else you’ve had to suffer with a dial up modem FAR too long in your life.
