Last week, my work sponsored a lunchtime meeting for employees. I went to it. (I get money back from my insurance by participation in these programs. Money is nice.)
I thought the meeting was about nutrition, eating healthy, fixing healthy meals. It was not. It was about osteoporosis.
Now, I had a test done by a professor here on campus who was doing research on osteoporosis. He told me I wouldn’t have to worry about osteopenias until I was about 103 years old. Phew! That’s good. Since I’m going to live until I’m 105 years old, I’ll only have to worry about osteoporosis for 2 years.)
I fought sleep the whole meeting.
One thing that penetrated my sleep-haze was the need for Vitamin D in my diet. I take a multi-vitamin so I thought I was covered.
This morning as I took my vitamin, I checked how much Vitamin D there was. About 75% of what I daily need. I think that with all the yogurt, milk, cheese, and cottage cheese that I consume daily, I ought to be sittin’ pretty good.
I skimmed the rest of the ingredients: Vitamin C, B12, potassium . . . . . . blah, blah, blah . . . and chloride.
Chloride? Chloride? There’s chloride in my multivitamin? They say that antibiotics kill the flora and fauna of the digestive tract. Can you imagine what chloride does?
I pondered this information. I came to the conclusion that chloride* was good for 3 things: keeping my innards spic-and-span-shiny-bright-and-white, whitening my teeth, and stopping bad breath.
I will keep a gallon of Clorox (for a daily swig) in the cupboard by my vitamins and a gallon up in the bathroom next to my toothbrush.

*According to the vast and extensive research I did (.03 seconds), I discovered that chloride is one of the most important minerals in the blood. It helps keep the fluid balanced on the inside and the outside of cells. It also helps to maintain proper blood volume, blood pressure, and pH of body fluids. Who would have ever thought?
